About Us

Chanco on the James has enjoyed a long trusted reputation as one of the oldest youth camping programs in Virginia. It has operated continuously for almost 40 years, since it’s founding in 1968. In 1989, Camp Chanco moved to a larger site of 125 breathtaking acres across the James River from Jamestown and Williamsburg. The camp operates in conjunction with the David S. Rose Conference Center located on the same site. Together, the camp and conference center offer customized programming for all types of groups, occasions, and ages. For more information about our conference center, click here.

Camp Chanco is a residential camping experience for boys and girls 8-18 years old as an outdoor, age-appropriate ministry of the Episcopal Diocese of Southern Virginia. It offers young people an enjoyable camping experience in a beautiful outdoor setting within a supportive Christian community. The residential camp program offers climbing-skill classes on our ropes course developed by professors at the College of William & Mary, waterfront and pool activities including swimming, canoeing, kayaking, and sailing instruction, as well as nature photography instruction, arts and crafts classes, archery classes, and introductory golf classes. Chanco has developed a variety of trips off-site to challenge the adventure seeking camper.

Camp Chanco is a community of fun and faith. It is a place to dream a dream; to take a risk; and dare to make a friend. Are you ready for an adventure this summer? Are you ready to meet new people, see new sights, and experience new things?
